How to Showcase AI Familiarity in a Job Interview

By  |

AI is no longer just something job seekers use to write resumes, research companies, or prepare for interviews. Increasingly, hiring managers want to know how candidates are using AI and automation in their actual work.

That does not mean you need to be a technical expert. But you should be ready to answer questions like:

“How are you using AI tools in your day-to-day workflow?”

“Can you give an example of how you used automation to save time or solve a problem?”

“How do you make sure AI-generated work is accurate?”

For fashion industry professionals, the strongest answers will show that you understand AI as a productivity and problem-solving tool, not a replacement for judgment, creativity, taste, customer insight, or business experience.

Go Beyond “I Use ChatGPT”

A weak answer sounds like this:

“I use ChatGPT sometimes to help with emails or job search materials.”

That may be honest, but it does not tell the employer much.

A stronger answer explains how you use AI in a work-related context. For example, you might use AI to summarize meeting notes, organize customer feedback, compare vendor responses, draft first-pass product descriptions, brainstorm assortment themes, clean up reporting language, or create checklists for repeatable processes.

The key is to show that AI helps you work faster, think more clearly, or make better decisions.

Connect AI to Business Impact

Hiring managers are less interested in the tool itself and more interested in the result.

Instead of saying:

“I used AI to help with reporting.”

Try:

“I used AI to turn weekly sales notes into a cleaner summary by category, which helped the team identify patterns faster before our Monday meeting. I still checked the numbers myself, but it saved time and made the discussion more focused.”

That answer shows efficiency, communication, and accountability.

Show That You Use Good Judgment

Employers also want to know that you understand the limits of AI. A strong answer should make it clear that you review, verify, and refine AI-generated output.

You might say:

“I use AI for first drafts, summaries, and idea generation, but I do not treat the output as final. I check it against source material, brand standards, customer needs, and business context.”

That kind of answer reassures the interviewer that you are not blindly copying and pasting.

Prepare a Few Examples

Before your interview, prepare two or three examples of how you have used AI or automation to improve your workflow. Choose examples that are relevant to your function, whether you work in design, merchandising, buying, planning, product development, marketing, HR, retail operations, or sales.

Your goal is not to sound like a tech person. Your goal is to sound like a modern professional who is curious, adaptable, efficient, and thoughtful.

In today’s market, AI familiarity can help you stand out. But the real advantage comes from showing how you combine new tools with strong judgment, industry knowledge, and human expertise.
